NAC Sponsors the 2010 Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM) Conference

Mining — Your Foundation for a Better World

NAC Constructors Ltd., seeking to support the Canadian Institute of Mining, has become a corporate sponsor of the 2010 CIM Conference to be held in Vancouver, BC May 9 - 12.

The theme of the CIM Conference and Exhibition 2010, Mining — Your Foundation for a Better World, reflects the key role that mining plays in the social and technical development of communities and societies worldwide. Building on the theme, the technical program will focus on the leading technological, environmental and social issues facing our industry today. A special emphasis on Latin America has been incorporated into this year’s program, reflecting the rapid growth of mining in that region and its strong mining-industry ties with North America.

A highlight of the conference will be the Plenary Session, moderated by Rex Murphy, one of Canada’s foremost journalists. This year’s theme — First Contact — emphasizes the importance of building strong community relations and demonstrating social responsibility at the onset of any industrial undertaking.

Concrete Pour a Tightly Choreographed Affair

DAN O'REILLY
Correspondent

It may not have been the largest of its kind in Ontario, but even it wasn’t an almost round-the-clock non-stop concrete pour at the Duffin Creek Pollution Control Plant in Pickering went off without a hitch. It took 363 truck loads or 3,259 cubic metres of concrete from three different St. Marys CBM plants for the construction of a 2, 970 square-metre 1.1-metre thick slab for an incinerator, part of a $575-million Phase 3 expansion. More...

Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant Nearly Complete

Richard Gilbert

The completion of construction deficiencies continues on the Seymour-Capilano filtration plant, as Metro Vancouver prepares the facility for operation.

"We are slowly introducing more and more water and testing the system," said Glenn Bohn, communications specialist with Metro Vancouver.

"The commissioning of the Seymour-Capilano treatment plant is well underway. We began deliveries of filtered Seymour water from the plant in December. The commissioning is being ramped up in the coming weeks."

The Seymour and Capilano watersheds supply up to 70 per cent of the Lower Mainland's drinking water.

The Seymour-Capilano filtration plant, which is the largest facility of its kind in Canada, will filter up to 1.8 billion litres of water per day.

"Seymour source water is going through the Seymour-Capilano filtration plant and 65 per cent of the water from the Seymour River is being filtered through the plant," said Bohn.

A quarterly report submitted to the Water Committee in November 2009, said NAC Constructors were busy completing construction deficiencies throughout the plant.

In September the plant was 97 per cent complete and Metro Vancouver was planning for transfer of site safety responsibilities from the prime contractor to Metro Vancouver.

"All of the major construction contracts are nearing completion, except for the twin tunnels," said the reports author Mark Ferguson, water and waste water treatment division manager.

"As of the end of September 2009, twin tunnels completion is 55 per cent. The balance of the project is at 97 per cent overall completion. Filtration of Seymour and Capilano source waters is scheduled for late 2009 and mid-2013, respectively." More...

The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVRD) is implementing the Seymour-Capilano Filtration 600 million dollar project as part of the Drinking Water Treatment Program to improve the availability and quality of drinking water to its customers. Projects include a new drinking water filtration plant‹the world's largest ultraviolet disinfection facility 7.2-kilometre twin tunnels linking the Seymour and Capilano watersheds, a new communications tower at the Seymour Falls Dam, a seismic upgrade to the Seymour Falls Dam and a new watermain twinning the existing main linking the Seymour plant to Burrard Inlet. More...

IGPC's Ethanol Plant Has Significant Economic Benefits for Region

Posted : Tue, 01 Dec 2009 14:30:56 GMT
Author : Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA)

Doyletech found construction of the new farmer-owned plant contributed to a net spending increase within the region of approximately $275 million. It also found an annual increase of at least $50 million in new economic spending in the region as a direct consequence of the plant's operations.

"Renewable fuels are delivering on their economic promise," says Gordon Quaiattini, President of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association, at the opening of the 6th Annual Renewable Fuels Summit in Vancouver. "These are real numbers coming from real plants, employing real people, in real towns. And we can see similar results in ethanol and biodiesel all across the country."

The IGPC plant is located in rural Southwestern Ontario, just outside of London, on the outskirts of St. Thomas. It concluded the plant construction delivered:

1. Net job creation of 1,152 person-years.
2. Total spending increase within the region and locality was $276,089,000.
3. The net municipal government benefit was $7,835,550.
4. The net Provincial government benefit was $44,172,000.
5. The net Federal government benefit was $70,088,000; this reflects
increased tax collections and lower EI costs.

Going forward, the operating phase of the IGPC plant is expected to deliver:

1. A total of 55 person-years of employment created each year.
2. Net annual economic increase in spending in the local community of
    $53,762,200.
3. Annual benefit to the Municipal government of $628,000.
4. An annual benefit to the Provincial government of $5,164,690.
5. An annual benefit to the Federal government of $5,191,250 from improved
GST collection and income tax, lower EI spending and corporate tax.
